Keeping old photographs for the future

Korea Through Photographs brings together old photographs of Korea and the memories of everyday life they hold.

Remembering the photographs I lost

Whenever I look at photographs from the 1990s, I am reminded of how precious they are. The streets, shops and clothes that seemed so ordinary then have become scenes we can no longer see today.

I lost all my old photographs during a move. I still regret not being able to take them out and look at them again. At some point, I started keeping my photographs safe so I would not have the same regret again.

One photograph at a time

I started Korea Through Photographs because I wanted to preserve more of Korea’s old photographs before they disappear. By bringing scattered images together, I hope to create a place where anyone can find a glimpse of those days.

Photographs do not need to show a major event to matter. An alley walked every day, a neighborhood shop, a school playground or a family outing can tell us so much about everyday life and society at the time.

Do you have old photographs to share?

If you have photographs that capture life and places in Korea’s past, please send them to me. A photograph you have kept may show the neighborhood someone has long been searching for, or bring back a forgotten memory.

Please email your photographs to the address below, along with anything you know about when and where they were taken and the stories behind them. It is fine if you do not know the exact date. Even a small recollection is something worth keeping together.
